The Connecticut Democrat had questioned Mullin about the administration's immigration policy when the secretary interrupted her. DeLauro responded by telling Mullin not to interrupt and gestured toward him. Mullin told DeLauro not to point her finger at him. DeLauro replied that she would point her finger at him.
Mullin stated that DeLauro should be as upset about 450,000 children who went missing as she was about current policy. He said she had not spoken about the issue for four years. DeLauro asked the subcommittee chair to intervene. Mullin repeated that she should be put in her place.
The Brookings Institution reported earlier this month that more than 145,000 children have had at least one parent detained during President Trump's second term. More than 22,000 children have had both parents detained, according to the report. Immigration and Customs Enforcement stated that it does not separate families.
The agency said parents are asked whether they want to be removed with their children or whether the children should be placed with a person the parent designates. Mullin and officials have said 450,000 unaccompanied minors went missing during former President Biden's administration.
