Hong Kong Activist Joshua Wong Faces September Hearing on Foreign Collusion Charge

Hong Kong activist Joshua Wong is scheduled for a plea and sentencing hearing on September 2, 2026, in a national security case. The High Court session is expected to last one day. Wong was arrested in June 2025 while serving a prior sentence at Stanley Prison.

Prosecutors accuse him of conspiring with Nathan Law and others between July 1 and November 23, 2020, to seek sanctions, blockades or other hostile actions by foreign entities against Hong Kong and China. The charge carries a penalty of three to 10 years in prison, or up to life imprisonment if deemed grave. This is Wong's second national security case.

In 2024 he pleaded guilty in a separate matter tied to an unofficial primary election and received a sentence of four years and eight months. Wong first gained attention in 2012 as a high school student opposing national education policies. He later led the 2014 Occupy Movement and co-founded the Demosisto party in 2016 with Law and other activists.

The party disbanded after the national security law took effect in 2020. Hong Kong authorities have offered rewards of 1 million Hong Kong dollars for information leading to the arrest of Law, who now lives in Britain, and other overseas activists. Last month a London court sentenced a former U.K.

Border official and a retired Hong Kong police officer for spying on dissidents in Britain, with Law among the targets.
