Hong Kong Court Acquits Former HSBC Banker of Assault Charge
A Hong Kong court cleared Kenneth Tung Hoi-yi of assaulting his wife at their Redhill Peninsula home on April 19, 2025. The ruling also awarded him legal costs after finding the evidence did not support the charge.
South China Morning PostA Hong Kong court has acquitted former HSBC banker Kenneth Tung Hoi-yi of assaulting his wife at their home in the Redhill Peninsula luxury estate on April 19, 2025. The court found that Tung did not draw suspicion upon himself during the incident and awarded him legal costs on Tuesday. The decision came after a trial in which the court examined testimony from both sides.
Tung previously led HSBC’s financial sponsors group in Asia-Pacific. His wife, Tang Chun-mei, testified that the couple argued over childcare on April 19, 2025, and that Tung called her “low-educated” and a “shrew”. Tang stated that Tung struck her on the head eight times and attempted to attack their son, prompting Tung’s mother to intervene.
After the reported incident, Tang drove the children and her mother-in-law to meet relatives before returning home and reporting the matter to police the next day.
The court determined that the evidence did not establish the assault charge. It also noted that Tang may have tried to frame Tung to gain an advantage in ongoing divorce proceedings. Tung was cleared of the charge and awarded legal costs following the ruling.
