Hong Kong International Airport opened its renovated Terminal 2 on Wednesday. 2-million-square-foot facility includes automated bag drop points, smart check-in kiosks and hybrid counters. The Hong Kong Airport Authority said the terminal will serve eight million travelers in its first year.

The authority estimates Terminal 2 will eventually reach an annual capacity of 30 million passengers. Combined with Terminal 1’s 70 million capacity, the airport is projected to handle 100 million travelers per year, up from 61 million in 2025. The terminal offers more than 20 dining and retail options, including Jollibee and stores featuring local designers.

Fred Lam, chairman of the Hong Kong Airport Authority, said Terminal 2 targets younger travelers. On opening day, the concourse featured bright LED screens showing ocean waves and fish, and a curved ceiling with parallel lines. Hong Kong Airlines was the only carrier operating at the terminal initially.

The Hong Kong government expressed support for the project during a launch ceremony earlier this week. An official described the airport’s role as an international aviation hub. Beijing has also directed the city to pursue that status. Skytrax ranked Singapore’s Changi Airport first in 2025 and 2026.

Hong Kong placed fourth and received recognition for its bathrooms and security processing. Andrew Yuen of the Aviation Policy Research Center at the Chinese University of Hong Kong noted competition from Guangzhou and Shenzhen airports.

6 percent year-over-year increase in passengers for March 2026. 5 percent growth over the same period. Shukor Yusof of Endau Analytics said some travelers have shifted from Middle East carriers to Asian airlines following recent regional instability.
