House Advances Procedural Vote After Internal GOP Negotiations

The House on Tuesday passed a party-line procedural vote that ended a weeks-long impasse over floor business. GOP members who had withheld support agreed to move forward after discussions with leadership. The vote allows debate and final action on multiple measures, including an annual appropriations bill for the State Department.

House Speaker Mike Johnson, a Louisiana Republican, said the SAVE America Act would be attached to that legislation before it reaches the Senate.

GOP Rep. Anna Paulina Luna of Florida said Monday she would support attaching the elections bill to appropriations and other must-pass legislation. She added that any Senate removal of the measure would be visible to the public.

Chip Roy of Texas said Johnson and conservatives reached an understanding on border security and related issues. He stated a bill addressing those topics would move next week. GOP Rep. Don Bacon of Nebraska described the chamber as dysfunctional, noting that a small group of members has repeatedly delayed action. The House faces a five-week recess beginning at the end of next week.
