House Committee Interviews Prison Guard Who Saw Epstein Last
House Oversight Committee members interviewed the corrections officer on duty the night before Jeffrey Epstein's death. The closed-door session examined staffing and oversight failures at the Metropolitan Correctional Center.
The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee interviewed a jail guard on Monday who said she was the last person to see Jeffrey Epstein alive. The guard worked at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in New York City on the night of August 9, 2019. Epstein was found dead in his cell the next morning.
Only a small number of committee members attended the closed-door session. A transcript is expected to be released soon. Democratic Virginia Rep. Suhas Subramanyam spoke to reporters after the interview. He said the system failed survivors and failed to bring Epstein to justice.
“It was clear incompetence and just a lack of oversight over Jeffrey Epstein that led to him being able to commit suicide." — Democratic Virginia Rep. on August 9 and plugged in Epstein's sleep apnea device. She said exceptions were made for him because he was Epstein. She also said Epstein had access to extra bed linens that other inmates were not allowed to have.”
death was ruled a suicide by hanging.
Federal prosecutors later charged the two guards on duty that night with falsifying records but dropped the charges in 2021. The guard received cash deposits totaling $12,000 between April 2018 and July 2019, including a $5,000 deposit ten days before Epstein's death. A federal judge ordered the release of an alleged suicide note from Epstein on May 6.
