House Democrats Plan Affordability Bill as First Priority if They Regain Majority
Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said the first bill under a Democratic House majority would focus on lowering living costs. Five working groups will begin meeting this week to develop components of the legislation.
orlandoweekly.comHouse Democrats plan to make legislation aimed at lowering living costs their first bill if they regain control of the chamber, Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said Monday. Jeffries told reporters the cost of living remains too high and that Democrats intend to make life more affordable. He spoke at a news conference in response to a question from Politico.
Jeffries sent a letter to House Democrats announcing five working groups focused on housing, gas and utilities, groceries and goods, caregiving, and health care. Each group will meet this week to begin drafting provisions for the legislation. Jeffries said the package, including the signature bill known as H.R. 1, will concentrate on reducing the cost of living and addressing the health care system.
Democrats have held private meetings for months to develop the specifics. Jeffries said he will seek input from every part of the caucus. The centrist House New Democrat Coalition and the Congressional Progressive Caucus each released affordability platforms earlier this year. The midterms are less than five months away.
