japantimes.co.jpThe House justice committee held its fourth public impeachment hearing against Vice President Sara Duterte on April 29, 2026, zeroing in on apparent death threats she made. , summoned the National Bureau of Investigation to provide copies of its findings from a probe into Duterte’s threats to the life of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
Rappler reported that the investigation also covered apparent threats to First Lady Liza Araneta Marcos and former House speaker Martin Romualdez.
In earlier hearings, the committee examined allegations of confidential fund misuse and unexplained wealth against Duterte. The panel deferred the issue of her tax records in the previous hearing amid conflicting views on whether opening the Bureau of Internal Revenue box containing the documents would violate the National Internal Revenue Code.
The committee may revisit those tax records during the fourth hearing.
If discussions wrap up early, the committee may hold a vote to determine probable cause to impeach Vice President Sara Duterte. A yes vote would lead to a committee report transmitted to the plenary as early as May 4, 2026, when Congress resumes session. Committee chair Jinky Luistro said that a plenary vote could take place as early as May 11, 2026.
A one-third vote in the plenary would result in the impeachment for a second time of Vice President Sara Duterte, which is unprecedented in Philippine history. The Senate would then hold a trial to determine whether Duterte should be convicted and disqualified from public office.
