House passes bipartisan housing bill

The House has forwarded a bipartisan housing package to the White House. The measure contains nearly 60 provisions aimed at easing home construction and first-time purchases. Under the Constitution, the bill becomes law if the president takes no action within ten days, unless Congress adjourns.

Provisions and background The package includes a ban on hedge funds purchasing single-family homes, a measure the president had requested earlier this year. Lawmakers from both parties supported the provisions in both chambers. If the president vetoes the bill, Congress could attempt an override.

A similar override occurred in early 2021 on defense authorization legislation. "When you ask me what happens next, if he cared about the American people, he'd have already signed the damned thing, and we'd be underway," a Democratic senator said on a Boston television program Sunday.

A Republican House member stated the bill would become law even without a signature and that lawmakers would still mark its passage.
