Democrats present voted in favor.
The vote had been scheduled for May 21 but was canceled by GOP leaders when absences threatened defeat. A prior House attempt ended in a 212-212 tie. The Senate advanced a separate war-powers resolution through a procedural vote last month with support from four Republican senators.
Johnson warned before the vote that the measure could have a “very negative” impact on negotiations. >"Operation Epic Fury is concluded," Johnson said. The resolution was introduced by Rep. Gregory Meeks of New York. He said Republican colleagues are feeling pressure back home over the cost of food and gas.
Meeks accused Johnson of stalling the vote to cover for the president. Another lawmaker said no member could specify what forces they would want pulled from Iran.
The administration stated that hostilities began on February 28, 2026. The 60-day deadline for congressional approval under the war-powers statute expired in early May. The resolution is a concurrent measure that requires approval by both chambers but does not go to the president for signature or veto. Gas prices averaged $3.14 a year earlier, according to the American Automobile Association.
