House Releases Changes to Senate-Passed Housing Affordability Bill

President Donald Trump called on the House to swiftly approve Senate-passed legislation aimed at easing housing affordability on Monday. The Senate passed the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act in March with fewer than a dozen defectors. The legislative standoff comes as housing affordability legislation has languished in the House for several months.

Senior House lawmakers unveiled a modified version of the Senate’s 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act on Thursday. The modified House version of the housing bill is expected to receive a vote in the House as early as next week. Any changes to the Senate’s proposal would force the Senate to consider the measure again.

The House modified bill struck out a provision that would have required some developers to sell single-family homes built for the purpose of renting within seven years after construction. The House product struck out the controversial provision on build-to-rent.

The House rival housing bill preserves a ban on central bank digital currencies through 2030.
