House Republicans on Thursday postponed a vote on a war powers resolution that would require President Trump to end U.S. military involvement in the conflict with Iran. The measure, introduced by Democrats, seeks to limit the president's ability to continue operations without additional congressional approval.

The House had planned to consider the resolution after the Senate advanced a similar measure earlier in the week. Republican leaders cited absences among their members as the reason for the delay, stating they wanted to ensure all lawmakers could participate.

Background on the Resolution The resolution follows a 212-212 tie vote last week on a previous version of the measure. Three Republicans joined Democrats in supporting that earlier effort. The Senate version advanced with support from four Republican senators and three absences.

Democratic Rep. Gregory Meeks of New York, who sponsored the House resolution, said Republicans were avoiding a vote they expected to lose. He stated that the party had the necessary support to pass the measure.

The vote delay comes as some Republicans have questioned whether the 60-day limit under the 1973 War Powers Resolution has expired. Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania said the matter must now come before Congress for authorization. The White House maintains that the ceasefire reached in early April removes the requirement for further congressional approval.

President Trump stated earlier this week that he was prepared to order additional strikes if negotiations with Gulf allies failed. Polling indicates most Americans disapprove of continued military action against Iran.
