foxnews.comHouse Republicans introduced three impeachment resolutions this month against two federal judges appointed during the Obama administration. One resolution filed June 9 targets the chief judge of the United States District Court for the District of Rhode Island over a June 5 ruling that vacated a United States Citizenship and Immigration Services policy pausing asylum applications from designated high-risk countries.
The resolution states the judge dismissed national-security justifications as pretextual.
Two resolutions filed June 8 and June 9 target a judge on the United States District Court for the Northern District of Georgia. The council issued a private reprimand, barred the judge from serving as chief judge or on Judicial Conference committees, and left the judge in active status. The Atlanta Police Department opened a separate inquiry into whether a department employee was involved.
All three resolutions were referred to the House Judiciary Committee. Under the Constitution, removal of a federal judge requires House impeachment and a two-thirds Senate vote. Fifteen federal judges have been impeached in United States history and eight convicted.
A separate Democratic resolution filed May 21 targets Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts over alleged ethical violations and partisan rulings.
