The House Rules Committee advanced the Sunshine Protection Act on Monday, setting up a floor vote that would let states adopt year-round daylight saving time. The measure has bipartisan support and backing from President Trump.
alternet.orgThe House Rules Committee voted 6-4 on Monday to advance the Sunshine Protection Act, clearing the way for a full House vote on legislation that would allow states to keep daylight saving time year-round. The bill would let states opt into permanent daylight saving time while preserving an opt-out option. It cleared the House Energy and Commerce Committee in May by a 48-1 margin.
Measure The legislation has drawn support from coastal lawmakers and President Trump, who has urged Congress to end the twice-yearly clock changes. Twenty states have already passed measures that would take effect if Congress authorizes the change. Proponents say permanent daylight saving time would improve sleep, reduce traffic accidents, lower crime and increase outdoor activity.
Chairman Brett Guthrie said the change would give people more time for exercise, family visits and retail spending.
Some Democrats and medical groups argue that permanent standard time better matches natural circadian rhythms and would keep more morning light for children. Rep. Mary Gay Scanlon offered an amendment to make standard time permanent nationwide, but it was rejected.
Rep. Keith Self criticized the focus on the issue while other legislation remains stalled. The Senate passed a similar bill in 2022 that did not advance in the House.
