House Votes 235-189 to Reject Resolution Barring U.S. Military Hostilities in Lebanon

The U.S. House of Representatives voted Tuesday to reject a concurrent resolution introduced by Rep. Rashida Tlaib that would have barred U.S. military hostilities in Lebanon. The measure failed 189-235, with 22 Democrats joining nearly all Republicans.

Tlaib offered an updated version of an earlier Lebanon war powers measure. The revised text exempted diplomatic protection and cooperation with Lebanese forces, after the original language drew criticism for potentially requiring withdrawal of personnel protecting embassy staff. The resolution did not reference Hezbollah.

House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Brian Mast stated there are not U.S. combat forces conducting operations or engaged in hostilities in Lebanon and noted U.S. training support for the Lebanese Armed Forces.

House Foreign Affairs Committee Ranking Member Gregory Meeks argued the resolution would keep the United States out of another conflict not aligned with national interest.
