HUD Secretary Criticizes New York Mayor's Rent Freeze and Tax Proposals

HUD Secretary Scott Turner stated that socialist progressive policies never work and that New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani's housing agenda would cause people to leave the city in droves. Fox News reported that Turner made the comments in an exclusive interview.

Turner said businesses and families cannot afford the policies, which include rent freezes for stabilized apartments and higher taxes on corporations and wealthy residents to fund affordable housing.

He added that Mamdani's policies are discouraging investment. Turner stated that Florida and Texas are ahead of the game on addressing the affordability crisis. He said affordability improves when governments make it easier for builders to construct new homes rather than expand government's role in the market.

Mamdani has argued his proposals are necessary to address New York City's housing affordability crisis. Mamdani's office did not respond to a request for comment.
