A $13,500 Unitree G1 humanoid robot named Gabi was officially ordained as a Buddhist monk during a ceremony at Seoul’s Jogyesa Temple. The robot, dressed in traditional robes, pledged devotion to the Buddha and took reprogrammed vows adapted for artificial intelligence. The Jogye Order described the event as an effort to connect ancient traditions with younger, technology-focused audiences.
Fox NewsA humanoid robot was ordained as a Buddhist monk on Wednesday at Seoul’s Jogyesa Temple in a ceremony hosted by the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism. The robot, a Unitree G1 model purchased for $13,500 and standing just over four feet tall, received the name Gabi.
" The crowd cheered at the response. The Jogye Order, South Korea's largest Buddhist sect, framed the ordination as a way to make ancient traditions more relevant to a younger, tech-obsessed generation.
While human monks typically pledge to abstain from killing, stealing and intoxicating substances, Gabi’s vows were reprogrammed for its capabilities. The robot pledged to respect and follow humans, refrain from damaging property or other robots, abstain from deceptive behavior and save energy by not overcharging.
The order said in a statement that the ordination signifies technology must be used in accordance with the values of compassion, wisdom, and responsibility. Officials added that the move symbolizes new possibilities for the coexistence of humans and technology.
A manager at the order told The New York Times that robots are destined to collaborate with humans in every field, suggesting it is natural for them to participate in religious festivals. " The Jogye Order did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The robot is scheduled to make its next public appearance at Seoul’s Lantern Festival on May 16-17, which honors the Buddha’s birthday. The ceremony highlights ongoing efforts by religious institutions to engage tech-driven audiences while raising questions about the role of artificial intelligence in spiritual practices.
Whether such initiatives enrich traditions or risk trivializing them remains a point of discussion.
