Humanoid robots performed two gallbladder-removal surgeries on live pigs at the University of California San Diego on or before July 8, 2026. The procedures and results appeared in the journal Nature the same day, @ABC reported. In the first operation one robot led while a human surgeon assisted.
In the second, two robots completed the procedure together. Trained human surgeons remotely controlled the machines throughout both cases. The robots were modified Unitree G1 models that stand about 5 feet tall, weigh roughly 60 pounds and cost less than $20,000 each.
"As a proof of concept, it absolutely worked," said Dr. Ryan Broderick, interim director of the Center for the Future of Surgery at UC San Diego. "The space constraints didn't exist like in traditional robotic surgery.
