The pro-European government of Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar ordered the closure of the Mathias Corvinus Collegium, Le Monde reported. The institution operates as a think tank and boarding school in Budapest and had received funding from the government of former Prime Minister Viktor Orban. Magyar was elected April 12 with more than 53 percent of the vote.
The closure was expected to take effect Tuesday, July 14. United States Vice President JD Vance met with the collegium's director general, Zoltan Szalai, at the Budapest headquarters on April 8. Marco Crivellaro, an Italian philologist who conducted research at the site, said his contract expires in December and that he would like to remain in Budapest.
