He married his wife, a former Fidesz justice minister, in 2006; the couple divorced in March 2023 and have three sons. He broke with Fidesz in 2024 following a scandal involving a pardon for an individual linked to covering up crimes by a paedophile.
He released a secret recording allegedly capturing government interference in the case, as described by his ex-wife. In 2024, he joined Tisza, a center-right pro-European party, and led it to 29 percent of the vote in the European Parliament elections last June.
The party campaigned on fighting corruption, improving the economy, and gaining support from Hungary's Roma community. He has pledged to unlock billions of euros in European Union funds.
The election drew high international interest due to Orbán's adversarial stance toward the European Union and his support for Russia in the Ukraine conflict.
Orbán had blocked a $105 billion EU loan to Ukraine. Tisza's victory is expected to end Hungary's clashes with EU partners over funding for Kyiv. U.S. Vice President JD Vance visited Hungary days before the election and praised Orbán's governance.
