Ian Garry Says He Plans to Beat Islam Makhachev in Grappling at UFC 330

Ian Garry said he plans to beat Islam Makhachev in grappling when the two meet for the welterweight title at UFC 330 in Philadelphia in August. Garry told followers on Instagram that he wants Makhachev to attempt a takedown. He recently attended a wrestling camp in Georgia after Makhachev questioned whether such skills could be acquired quickly.

"He's never fought someone as long and tall as me," Garry said. "He's not fought someone as fast as me. " Garry added that he hopes Makhachev takes him down. "Because I want to prove to the world that he can't submit me.

I want to prove to the world that I can beat him in his own world," he said. Garry also stated he intends to stop Makhachev's win streak. Makhachev defended the lightweight title four times before moving up and stopping Jack Della Maddalena for the welterweight belt in November 2025.

Garry won his first eight UFC bouts, lost to Shavkat Rakhmonov, then defeated Carlos Prates and Belal Muhammad.
