Officials said Araujo ignored commands to stop, attempted to flee, and drove his vehicle toward federal officers.
The agent fired after Araujo tried to ram an ICE officer, according to DHS. Araujo's vehicle struck an ICE vehicle before he was taken to a hospital, where he died. The FBI opened an investigation into a possible assault on a federal law enforcement officer.
An FBI evidence response team processed the scene at DHS's request. FBI spokesperson Connor Hagan said agents are investigating the circumstances surrounding the confrontation.
Sylvia Garcia, whose district includes the shooting scene, called for an independent review. Garcia stated that the ICE account needs to be independently verified and investigated and that all available footage, communications, and other evidence should be preserved and reviewed as part of a full and impartial investigation.
