Federal immigration officers have arrested nearly 6,500 illegal immigrants with criminal histories in New York City since President Donald Trump took office, Washington Examiner reported. White House border czar Tom Homan disclosed the figure on Sunday during a taping of Fox News’s Fox and Friends in Manhattan. Homan stated that the total stood just shy of 6,500.
“We’ve got just shy of 6,500 criminal illegal aliens we took off the streets of New York,” he said. He added that Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers are already conducting operations across the five boroughs and the state. Homan has promised a surge of ICE activity in the city since May.
He declined to provide details on the timing, citing risks to officer safety and the possibility that targets could flee. ” Homan said. ” Federal officials had initial cooperation with the city under former Mayor Eric Adams, who allowed ICE access to Rikers Island.
That cooperation ended after the election of Zohran Mamdani last November, Washington Examiner reported. Mamdani has expressed support for the city’s sanctuary policies that bar local law enforcement from assisting ICE at the jail.
