An ICE officer fatally shot Lorenzo Salgado Araujo during a traffic stop in Houston at 6:50 a.m. Tuesday. The shooting took place while officers attempted to arrest him as part of a targeted immigration enforcement operation.
ICE described Araujo as a Mexican national and illegal alien. According to the agency, Araujo rammed an ICE law enforcement vehicle, refused multiple verbal commands, and attempted to run over an officer with his car. An ICE officer then fired his weapon in self-defense, striking Araujo in the abdomen.
Araujo was taken to a hospital, where he died of his injuries. Ronaldo Salgado, who identified himself as Araujo's son, said his father was in the area seeking workers for hire when the shooting occurred. The FBI will take over the investigation.
Reuters reported that it could not immediately verify Araujo's immigration status or the circumstances of the shooting. The FBI and Department of Homeland Security did not respond to requests for comment.
