A federal immigration agent shot and killed a man during a vehicle stop in Houston on Thursday. The man was identified as Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a Mexican national.
According to the Department of Homeland Security, agents were conducting an enforcement operation when they attempted to stop the vehicle. ICE stated that the driver did not comply with directions to pull over, struck an ICE vehicle, and then drove toward an officer. An agent fired, striking the driver. Salgado Araujo was taken to a hospital and later died.
A Department of Homeland Security official told ABC News that the man was not the original target of the operation. The New York Times reported that no evidence was immediately offered to support ICE's account of the incident.
Ronaldo Salgado, identified as the man's son, told Telemundo Houston that his father had been in the area looking to hire workers. He called for an independent investigation into the shooting.
The vessels' operators have not been publicly identified by the U.S. government. No publicly released evidence has documented the sequence of events described by ICE beyond the agency's statement.
