ICE Requires Body Cameras on Vehicle Stops After Three Recent Deaths

The Department of Homeland Security separately announced that every ICE arrest team will have at least one officer equipped with a camera. White House border czar Tom Homan made the statement during a July 19 appearance on CBS Face the Nation. He said the cameras had already been purchased and that training of personnel was underway.

Body cameras have been deployed to more than half of ICE field offices. The remaining offices are scheduled to receive them within 60 days. Homan said the rollout had been delayed by a partial government shutdown earlier in the year. Congress approved $20 million for body cameras in April 2026 and later passed a roughly $70 billion package to fund ICE and Border Patrol operations through the end of the Trump administration.

The policy change follows three deaths during immigration enforcement actions this month. An ICE officer fatally shot 52-year-old Lorenzo Salgado Araujo in Houston on July 7. Six days later an officer shot and killed a Colombian driver in Biddeford, Maine. A 28-year-old Mexican national was struck and killed by a tractor-trailer after fleeing agents in St. Augustine, Florida.

Homan said unmarked vehicles are equipped with emergency lights and that compliance with law enforcement stops would have prevented the recent fatalities. Investigations into the Houston and Maine shootings remain underway. At least seven people have been shot dead in federal immigration operations since January 2025.

President Trump overturned a temporary DHS suspension of vehicle stops on Wednesday.
