Illinois Town Reopens Auto Plant After Two-Year Closure

Stellantis closed its assembly plant in Belvidere, Illinois in February 2023, eliminating roughly 1,000 jobs. The plant remained idle for two years before the company announced a $613 million investment in October 2025 to reopen the facility. The reopening will support 3,300 jobs building Jeep Cherokee and Compass models.

Belvidere has a population of 25,000 and sits 70 miles northwest of Chicago.

The Trump administration has pursued an economic agenda built on four pillars. The first pillar involves tax policy structured to reward work and attract investment. The second pillar is deregulation. Executive Order 14192, signed in January 2025, requires agencies to repeal ten existing regulations for every new one introduced.
