Imax Announces 10-Theater Expansion Deal with Hoyts in Australia and New Zealand

These new venues will feature advanced laser technology for enhanced viewing experiences. Hoyts operates over 500 screens in Australia and New Zealand. The company reported that this expansion will provide more audiences with access to immersive cinema technology.
The agreement reflects ongoing investments in premium formats amid a recovery in the global box office following the pandemic.
Imax's presence in Australia has expanded from one location in 2022 to 10 currently, with an additional 14 screens in development. In 2025, six new Imax locations opened in Melbourne, Sydney, and Perth, coinciding with the premiere of Avatar: Fire and Ash.
Imax generated a record $18.6 million Australian dollars, equivalent to $12.1 million U.S. dollars, in box office revenue in Australia during 2025, driven by films such as Project Hail Mary. Upcoming movies filmed with Imax cameras, including Mortal Kombat 2 and Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu, are expected to contribute to future performance.
Australia ranks among Imax's top-performing markets globally, where demand has exceeded available screens.
