Incoming UK Prime Minister Burnham Faces Labour Split Over North Sea Drilling Plans

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer resigned this month, leaving Andy Burnham positioned to take office in July if he faces no challenge from Labour Party colleagues. The transition occurs as the Iran war disrupts oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz and as the UK continues to adjust to supply shocks from Russia's war in Ukraine.

President Donald Trump attributed Starmer's resignation to his "failed" energy policy.

The statement has intensified debate inside the Labour Party over whether the next government should authorize new drilling or maintain its focus on clean energy.
