India Prepares First Private Orbital Rocket Launch

India will launch its first privately developed orbital-class rocket in the coming days, officials said. The country has previously sent spacecraft to Mars and the moon and placed hundreds of satellites into orbit. New Delhi’s space economy reached $8.4 billion after the sector opened to private investment in 2020. More than 400 space startups have formed since the policy change.

Several key government and private firms that collaborate with the Indian Space Research Organisation also work on defense projects. This overlap between space and security activities has increased in recent years. A Vikram-1 orbital rocket model is displayed at a facility on the outskirts of Hyderabad.

The vehicle represents the first orbital-class rocket developed entirely by a private Indian company.

The 2020 policy shift allowed private companies to participate in satellite launches, ground stations, and related services. Government data show the number of domestic space firms has risen sharply since then. India continues to expand both civil and defense space capabilities through public-private partnerships. Officials have not released an exact launch date for the upcoming mission.
