India introduced its first hydrogen-powered train on Friday. The two-car pilot will run in Haryana and forms part of efforts to cut rail emissions.
Abc NewsIndia placed its first domestically designed and built hydrogen-powered train into service on Friday. The train consists of two hydrogen-powered driving cars and eight passenger coaches and will operate in the northern state of Haryana. The train can reach speeds of up to 75 kph and carry about 2,600 passengers, railway officials said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the train, named “NaMo Green Rail,” at Jind railway station.
The project includes hydrogen storage and refueling infrastructure to test the technology on the rail network. Hydrogen fuel cells generate electricity by combining hydrogen and oxygen, with water vapor as the only direct emission. Several other countries already operate hydrogen trains on routes that are not fully electrified.
The launch supports India’s goal of reaching net-zero emissions by 2070. “This is a very significant day in the direction of self-reliant India and sustainable development,” Modi said in a post on X.
