India's total fuel consumption fell 3.7% from May to 19.24 million metric tons in June 2026, OilPrice.com reported, citing data from the country's oil ministry. Consumption was also 3.1% lower than in June 2025. Gasoline sales rose 7.4% from a year earlier even as they declined 3.2% from May.
Diesel sales increased 6.2% year-on-year while falling 1.4% month-on-month. India imported a record 5 million barrels per day of crude oil in June, with 2.6 million barrels per day sourced from Russia. The country is the world's third-largest oil importer and raised purchases from Russia and Venezuela after the Strait of Hormuz closure earlier in 2026.
Crude oil inventories stood at 107 million barrels at the end of February 2026. A U.S. waiver permitting sales of Russian oil already loaded on tankers expired before July 7, 2026.
