India has introduced new grid regulations that impose penalties on solar generators unable to deliver electricity volumes they have committed to supply. The rules were reported by Reuters and form part of a broader regulatory overhaul of the country's electricity transmission system.

India's grid capacity has grown more slowly than solar installations, producing higher rates of curtailment. In the first quarter of 2026, grid and transmission constraints caused 300 GWh of solar curtailments, according to climate think tank Ember.

That volume accounted for two-thirds of all solar curtailments recorded during the period.

The government in New Delhi has included provisions addressing grid security within the updated regulations. These measures coincide with continued growth in solar and wind capacity across the country. Solar and wind developers have expressed concern that the new penalty structure could affect project revenues.

Industry participants have not yet released quantified estimates of potential financial impacts.
