Indian national sentenced to five years for Ontario freeway crash that killed three

Jashanpreet Singh, a 21-year-old Indian national, was sentenced to five years in prison Tuesday for a crash that killed three people on the 10 Freeway in Ontario, California. New York Post reported that Singh entered the United States under the Biden administration and was under the influence of drugs when his red semi-truck struck seven vehicles in October 2025.

Singh pleaded guilty last week to three counts of felony vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence after changing his plea from not guilty during a hearing the prior month.

He had faced a maximum of 10 years. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement placed an immigration detainer on him after his arrest. The California Department of Motor Vehicles confirmed Singh held a commercial driver’s license.

The U.S. Department of Transportation alleged California unlawfully upgraded the license to an expanded version on his 21st birthday, weeks after a federal law barred illegal migrants from such licenses. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy stated the crash would not have happened if California had followed federal rules.

Witness Jason Calmelat said he heard an explosion as the truck sped straight into slowed traffic without stopping or swerving. The truck rolled into an embankment and caught fire. California Highway Patrol Officer Rodrigo Jimenez described car parts scattered across a large scene that included a hazardous materials response.

New York Post reported that the Trump administration has followed a “zero releases” policy for apprehended illegal migrants since the arrest. The same outlet noted a separate case involving another Indian national, Harjinder Singh, who faces homicide charges in Florida after an August crash while driving under a California commercial license.
