Indian police allege Melbourne teacher murdered by brother
Indian police say a Melbourne mathematics teacher was killed by his brother in Amritsar last month. The 66-year-old Australian citizen had traveled to Punjab to prepare a property for sale.
Indian police allege that Melbourne mathematics teacher Sunil Sharma was murdered by his brother and his body placed in a canal. Sunil Sharma, 66, disappeared on May 22 while in Amritsar, Punjab, preparing an investment property for sale ahead of retirement. Police stated that Satish Sharma gave his brother a drink containing sleeping pills and then struck him on the head with a baseball bat.
Arrest and investigation Amritsar police said Satish Sharma's wife and son helped remove a blood-stained mattress and the baseball bat before the body was placed in a canal. The three were arrested on Saturday local time. Sunil Sharma's daughter Surbhi Sharma said authorities told her that her uncle had been arrested and that a search was underway to recover her father's body.
Family statement In a statement, Surbhi Sharma described her father as "intelligent, strong and funny" and "loving and sensitive" with a "good heart." She added that she counts herself "so lucky to have had a father like him who taught me everything I know about life today." She also noted tributes from the Diamond Valley College community, where Sunil Sharma had taught for many years.
