Indian police detain Rahul Gandhi and sister during New Delhi protest over education policy

Indian police detained opposition leader Rahul Gandhi and his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on July 21 in New Delhi during a demonstration against changes to the country's education system. The protest was organized by the Cockroach Janta Party, a group that began as a satirical online campaign and has since expanded into larger rallies, according to Semafor.

AFP reported that police detained the two opposition figures as the crowd gathered. Rahul Gandhi had stated the previous day that authorities used tear gas and batons against participants. Police said 60 protesters were injured during the dispersal of the demonstration.

The Cockroach Janta Party has grown from its initial online origins into one of the larger demonstrations challenging the ruling coalition, Semafor reported. Rahul Gandhi called for Prime Minister Narendra Modi to resign over the handling of the protest, according to Le Monde.
