The Indiana Fever revoked the credential of independent journalist Scott Agness on May 21, barring him from team events after he posted that Caitlin Clark would miss the May 20 game against the Portland Fire as part of a strategic management plan for the season.

Agness, who has covered the Fever and the Indiana Pacers for two decades, wrote on X on May 20 that Clark “will NOT play tonight” and that he had been told the absence was part of season-long load management. Coach Stephanie White told reporters before that game there was “no managing,” adding, “She’s healthy.

The Fever said Agness’s post contained “inaccurate and unsubstantiated” information about Clark. The team had no further comment when reached by USA Today Sports. The WNBA did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The league had already issued the Fever a warning for failing to update Clark’s status properly before the May 20 game. m. local time the day before each contest.

Clark was not listed on the report even though she missed practice on May 19 for back treatment. m. that she could not play.

White announced the same day that Clark would be listed as probable on injury reports for the foreseeable future while managing the back issue. Agness had his credential revoked by the Pacers in 2024, and the NBA has also revoked his credentials. The Fever and Pacers share ownership but maintain separate front offices and public-relations staffs.

Agness previously worked for the Pacers as a locker-room attendant and equipment manager from 2003 to 2012, then as a team website reporter from 2012 to 2014 and as a beat writer for The Athletic from 2018 to 2020 before launching his own site.
