Indonesian Authorities Arrest Two Russian Nationals After Drug Chase Hits Pedestrians
Police stopped a man and woman after a high-speed pursuit that struck several pedestrians. Authorities seized 7.8 kilograms of hashish the pair had brought from Thailand.
en.antaranews.comIndonesian authorities arrested a 52-year-old woman and a 40-year-old man, both Russian nationals, after a vehicle chase on Bali ended with several pedestrians struck. The pair had arrived separately on Friday. The woman flew into Jakarta's Soekarno-Hatta airport, drove a rental car to Bali, and met the man at a seaport.
He collected her and the suitcase, then dropped her at an undisclosed location before speeding away.
Officials said the man drove at very high speed and recklessly, striking several local residents before police stopped the vehicle. Both suspects were taken into custody the same day. Authorities seized 7.8 kilograms of hashish from a suitcase the pair had carried from Thailand. The National Narcotics Agency confirmed the weight of the seized material.
An investigation is underway to determine whether the two are part of a larger drug syndicate. Indonesia maintains some of the world's strictest narcotics laws, including the death penalty for traffickers, though executions have been under moratorium since 2016. The agency posted photographs of the suspects and the suitcase containing the seized substance.
