Industry leaders at a July 7 conference recommended that Hong Kong focus its first five-year artificial intelligence plan on competitive areas such as urban development, healthcare and finance. The advice came during a panel at the South China Morning Post’s China Conference.
livemint.comIndustry leaders recommended on July 7 that Hong Kong draft a five-year artificial intelligence plan focused on its strongest sectors rather than a broad range of frontier technologies, South China Morning Post reported. The recommendations were made during a panel titled “Intelligence at Scale: Hong Kong’s AI-Powered Future” at the South China Morning Post’s China Conference held in Hong Kong.
Zhang Xiaoyan, vice-president of the China Centre for Information Industry Development under China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, said the plan should avoid covering every area because Hong Kong’s economy is relatively small.
“You can pick the most competitive scenarios in Hong Kong, such as urban development, healthcare or finance, instead of manufacturing, because manufacturing in Hong Kong accounts for only 1 per cent of your general gross domestic product,” Zhang said.
She also recommended that Hong Kong establish pilot programmes for cross-border data transfers and build high-level industry data sets in collaboration with mainland partners. Jeanne Lim, founder and CEO of BeingAI, and Hendrick Sin, president of the Hong Kong Internet Professional Association, participated in the panel discussion.
