Insta360 Releases Retro Viewfinder Accessory for Go 3S Action Camera
Insta360 introduced the Retro Viewfinder, an optical accessory that allows the Go 3S 4K action camera to be used as a handheld device. The pill-shaped camera, which lacks a built-in screen, launched in June 2024. The accessory is available separately for $47.99 or in a bundle with the camera starting at $299.99.
The VergeInsta360 has released the Retro Viewfinder, an accessory designed to repurpose its Go 3S 4K action camera as a handheld device. The pill-shaped Insta360 Go 3S 4K action camera launched in June 2024 as an updated version of the 2.7K Go 3 that debuted a year earlier.
The Go 3S has remained available as a smaller alternative to the Go Ultra, which introduced a larger sensor and higher frame rates. The Retro Viewfinder is available immediately through Insta360's online store for $47.99 on its own. It is also offered in a new Go 3S Retro Bundle starting at $299.99 for the 64GB version of the camera, which is less expensive than the $349.99 Standard Bundle that includes the Action Pod dock instead.
The accessory slots onto the front of the Go 3S using strong magnets rather than mechanical latches.
How the Retro Viewfinder Works Unlike typical action camera use where the Go 3S is mounted on a helmet or other surface, the Retro Viewfinder allows the device to be held at chest level while the user looks down into an optical viewfinder to frame shots.
The front panel of the Go 3S serves as the shutter button, with a single press capturing a photo and a double press starting or stopping video recording. Insta360 described the design as creating a vintage shooting experience inspired by classic film cameras.
The optical viewfinder provides framing assistance but does not deliver an accurate preview of the Go 3S's wide field of view. The viewing angle is limited, and tilting the accessory 15 to 20 degrees in any direction causes the view to be lost entirely.
The image seen through the viewfinder is also flipped horizontally.
Users must adjust for the wide-angle lens, which can include unintended elements in the frame even after deliberate composition attempts. Photos can be cropped afterward using the Insta360 mobile app. A magnetic plastic cover on the bottom of the Retro Viewfinder allows the camera's front lens to function as a selfie mirror, though the reflection is dark and framing remains difficult.
The accessory ships with a brown leather carrying case and a clip-on charger that includes an additional battery. This charger more than doubles the Go 3S battery capacity from 310mAh to over 700mAh. During testing, approximately 150 photos were captured during a one-hour walk before the battery was depleted.
Video recording at 4K drains the battery faster, as does maintaining a connection to the smartphone app. Adjusting camera settings, including film-emulating filters or color profiles, requires a Wi-Fi connection to a smartphone. The Retro Viewfinder includes a hidden NFC tag to simplify launching the app, though the full connection process takes 15 to 20 seconds.
Insta360's Action Pod, which features a flip-up LCD screen, provides more direct access to settings and is described as more convenient for many uses. The Go 3S remains an effective camera, but its wide field of view presents challenges when paired with the Retro Viewfinder for precise framing.
The accessory makes the camera easier to hold but delivers mixed results for deliberate photography. Those who already own the Go 3S may find the standalone Retro Viewfinder worth considering at its current price.
