Instagram has discontinued support for end-to-end encrypted direct messages effective May 8 2026. The change reverses a plan announced by parent company Meta in 2019 to roll out the technology across its messaging services. Users will now only have access to standard encryption on the platform.
The IndependentInstagram users lost the ability to send end-to-end encrypted direct messages on May 8 2026 after the platform discontinued the optional feature globally. The company said it would no longer support end-to-end encryption on Instagram direct messages.
This follows a 2019 pledge by Meta to introduce the technology across its messaging services including Facebook and Instagram. The company completed the rollout on Facebook Messenger in 2023 and had made the feature optional on Instagram with plans to expand it.
End-to-end encryption allows only the sender and recipient to read messages. With the change Instagram will be able to access the content of direct messages including images videos and voice notes. Standard encryption which replaces it permits an internet service provider to access material if required and is used by services such as Gmail.
Background to the Decision Meta updated its terms and conditions in March without a public announcement stating that end-to-end encrypted messaging on Instagram would no longer be supported after May 8 2026. The company told reporters the decision was made because too few users opted in to the feature.
In 2019 Meta had said the future is private when announcing its encryption plans. The company had defended the rollout for years while addressing technical and other concerns.
Child protection organizations welcomed the move.
The NSPCC said it was pleased because end-to-end encryption can allow perpetrators to evade detection enabling the grooming and abuse of children to go unseen according to Rani Govender from the charity. Privacy campaigners expressed disappointment.
Maya Thomas from Big Brother Watch said the group was concerned that Meta may be caving to government pressure noting that end-to-end encryption was one of the key ways children can keep their data safe online.
The decision leaves Instagram offering only standard encryption for direct messages. End-to-end encryption remains the default on services including Signal WhatsApp Facebook Messenger Apple's iMessage and Google Messages. Other platforms such as Telegram X Snapchat and Discord offer or plan to offer the technology to varying degrees.
A cyber security expert stated that social media platforms monetize communications to serve targeted advertising and that companies like Meta are focusing on training AI models for which messaging data can be valuable. Instagram has previously said direct messages are not used to train AI.
The company declined to comment further on the reversal.
