Iran Announces Controlled Maritime Zone in Strait of Hormuz
Iran's Persian Gulf Strait Authority has designated a controlled maritime zone spanning the Strait of Hormuz. The zone runs from a line connecting Kuh-e Mubarak in Iran to the south of the UAE's Fujairah at the eastern entrance to a line connecting the tip of Qeshm Island to Umm al-Quwain at the western entrance.
Iran's Persian Gulf Strait Authority has established a controlled maritime zone through the Strait of Hormuz. The authority defined the zone using two boundary lines. One connects Kuh-e Mubarak in Iran to the south of the UAE's Fujairah at the eastern entrance. The second connects the tip of Qeshm Island to Umm al-Quwain at the western entrance.
The announcement appeared in a post on X from the authority.
It described the area as subject to Iranian control measures. No additional operational details such as enforcement procedures or effective dates were included in the initial statement.
Hormuz remains a critical passage for global oil shipments. Roughly one-fifth of the world's petroleum trade moves through the waterway each year. The new designation follows earlier Iranian statements about maritime security in the region. Those statements did not specify geographic boundaries.
The authority's post did not reference any immediate changes to shipping traffic or international agreements.
