Iran Conflict Raises UK Energy Costs and US Oil Earnings

Baldock stated that in 1990, Currys paid the same per kilowatt hour for energy as Best Buy, but costs have diverged sharply since.

Currys is the UK’s largest electricals retailer, and Baldock expressed these concerns at the Centre for Policy Studies’ Margaret Thatcher Conference in the City of London.
Baldock is stepping down after eight years as chief executive of Currys. During the event, he discussed the issue with Greg Jackson, chief executive of Octopus Energy. Jackson stated that in the UK, electricity is generated from solar panels and onshore wind at about 5p a unit, and from offshore wind and gas at about 10p a unit, yet UK households typically pay 25p a unit.

Wirth made the statement in an interview on 'Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan'. Jerome Powell held his 66th and final press conference as Federal Reserve chair on Wednesday.
Powell will stay on as a Fed governor until 2028, he announced. Hilsenrath noted that the Federal Open Market Committee under Powell achieved mostly unanimous decisions across 11 other central bankers.
Powell responded to Trump’s legal attacks this spring with a calm video message. The Fed under Powell launched massive bond-buying programs, cut rates to zero, and promised to keep them there during the COVID crisis. 9% by the time the FOMC started raising rates nine months after June 2021.
At his June 2021 press conference, Powell said 'I don’t even want to talk about talking about it' when pressed on winding down bond purchases. Inflation remains above the Fed’s 2% target six years after Covid. The Bank of England kept interest rates on hold this week.
More than seven million UK homeowners have fixed-rate mortgages, which is 87% of all mortgages. Over the next three years, average monthly payments for UK homeowners moving to a new fixed mortgage deal are expected to rise by approximately £80. The Bank of England reported that 53% of UK mortgage holders are expected to see their payments rise, while 25% of UK mortgage holders who fixed at higher rates are expected to see their payments fall.
