President Donald Trump announced he secured the release of eight Iranian women sentenced to death for protesting. Iran's state news agency Mizan denied any concessions, stating some women were already released and others faced prison but not execution. Experts confirmed the women's images were AI-modified but the individuals are real.
news.google.comPresident Donald Trump stated on Wednesday that he had secured the release of eight Iranian women condemned to execution for protesting the regime. The announcement followed Trump's Tuesday post on Truth Social about the imminent executions of the women, which included a screenshot of a collage featuring eight glamorously backlit, soft-focus portraits.
The photos in the collage were accused of being AI-generated, with a viral X post stating: 'Trump is begging Iranian leaders to not execute 8 AI-generated women.
' Mizan added that some of the eight women had already been released, others were facing prison time but not execution, and Tehran had made no concessions regarding their status. Mahsa Alimardani, associate director of the Technology Threats & Opportunities program at WITNESS, told The Verge that the collage posted by Trump is AI-modified, but the women in it are real.
Alimardani identified the woman in the top right corner of the collage as Bita Hemmati, whose photograph appeared in several news stories in right-leaning news outlets last week.
' Alimardani named six verified women in the collage: Bita Hemmati, Mahboubeh Shabani, Venus Hossein-Nejad, Golnaz Naraghi, Diana Taherabadi, and Ghazal Ghalandri. She noted that the identities of the final two women, Panah Movahedi and Ensieh Nejati, were unverified as of the article's publication. The six verified women participated in protests against the Iranian government in January.
Aside from Bita Hemmati, none of the other five verified women are reported to have received death sentences.
