Abc News reported that Iran executed two Islamic State members on Tuesday after they were convicted of armed rebellion against the Islamic Republic. Iranian state television identified the men as Mohieddin Abdollahi and Hossein Palani and said they were hanged after the Supreme Court upheld their death sentences.
The two belonged to an Islamic State cell formed after the group's territorial defeat in Iraq and Syria.
The cell had planned attacks inside Iran, according to the report. Iranian security forces located the group's hideout in the Bamo mountain area near the Iraqi border and carried out an operation that killed several militants and led to additional arrests. Three members of Iran's Revolutionary Guard were killed during the operation.
Authorities seized weapons, ammunition and other equipment. The judiciary did not disclose the location of the executions.
