Iran national team arrives in Los Angeles one day early for World Cup match
Iran’s national soccer team flew into Los Angeles a day ahead of schedule from its training base in Tijuana. Protests and a legal challenge over flag displays have accompanied preparations for the match at SoFi Stadium.
New York PostM. ET one day earlier than expected. The squad had used Estadio Caliente in Tijuana as its training base during World Cup preparations.
A decomposing body was found in a car trunk parked outside Estadio Caliente on Friday. Forensic workers inspected the vehicle at the site. Organized protests took place outside SoFi Stadium in Inglewood on the day the team prepared for its World Cup opener there.
Members of the Iranian-American diaspora gathered in coordinated demonstrations aimed at the Iranian government. A small protest also occurred in Los Angeles ahead of the match. Protesters waved flags during the demonstration.
Iranian-American supporters displayed Lion and Sun flags and “Free Iran” banners at Levi’s Stadium during the Qatar versus Switzerland match on Saturday. The Institute for Voices of Liberty filed for a temporary restraining order in California Superior Court against FIFA over reported restrictions on the Lion and Sun flag.
The Institute for Voices of Liberty states the Lion and Sun is a centuries-old cultural icon tied to Iranian identity before the current government.
The organization attempted to raise concerns with FIFA before filing the lawsuit but did not receive meaningful responses. It is asking the court to protect free expression, clarify what counts as a political symbol under FIFA rules, and block enforcement of any ban across World Cup venues in California and beyond.
Activist and journalist Shayan Khosravani Farahani stated that stadium entry at Levi’s Stadium involves only a metal detector with no special checking.
