Iran, Oman Hold First Joint Committee Meeting on Strait of Hormuz Administration

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi stated that Iran and Oman held the first meeting of the Joint Hormuz Committee on 29 June 2026 in Muscat. Gharibabadi said the two sides reviewed current issues and exchanged views on future management of the waterway.
Both nations claim sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz, a 30-kilometre-wide passage that serves as a route for Gulf energy exports.
Gharibabadi stated that Iran and Oman reached a common understanding on administration of the strait. He said Oman supports involvement as a coastal state with sovereign rights and believes fees should be collected for services provided. The two countries decided to establish technical committees.
Iranian and Omani experts will begin specialised discussions on arrangements, a text, and shipping routes in seven or eight days. Iran is considering services fees on passage that did not exist before the war.
Gharibabadi said under Article 5 of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, Iran determines shipping routes under temporary conditions. The text of the preliminary deal between Iran and the United States specified toll-free passage for 60 days only after signing.
