Public ceremonies are set for three days in Tehran, followed by events in Qom on July 7 and burial at the Imam Reza shrine in Mashhad on July 9. The dates fall within the Shia mourning month of Muharram.
The public, multi-city route creates security challenges for Iran's new leadership. The late leader's son and successor has remained out of public view since the February conflict began. A counterterrorism expert told Fox News Digital that the timing of the funeral reflects a calculation that any peace agreement will remain in place through early July.
