Iran Suspends Hormuz Talks as Trump Announces Israel-Hezbollah Ceasefire Deal and Preliminary 60-Day Agreement
President Trump said talks with Iran continue at a rapid pace even as Tehran halted negotiations and kept the Strait of Hormuz closed. Oil prices rose after the suspension.
The HillIran suspended talks with the United States on Monday in protest of Israeli strikes in Lebanon, leaving the Strait of Hormuz closed and sending oil prices higher. President Trump posted on Truth Social that talks with Iran are continuing at a rapid pace.
In separate interviews the same day he told CNBC he did not care if the negotiations ended and told NBC News he had not been informed that Iran paused the talks.
Trump said Iran are better negotiators than they are fighters. He added that the United States would keep the blockade and would not start dropping bombs. Iran stated it would keep the Strait of Hormuz closed while negotiations remain stalled.
Around 20 percent of the world’s oil and gas supply flows through the waterway. S. military struck Iranian radar and command-and-control sites for drones over the weekend and shot down two Iranian one-way attack drones, according to Centcom.
Iran downed an American MQ-1 Predator drone, and the two sides exchanged fire. Over the weekend Trump considered a preliminary deal negotiated by Washington and Tehran. The tentative agreement would extend the ceasefire for another 60 days, open the Strait of Hormuz, and prepare for talks on Iran’s nuclear program.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered troops deeper into Lebanon over the weekend. Israeli forces seized Beaufort Castle, a Medieval Crusader-era site that gives Israel the high ground and cuts Hezbollah from commanders north of the Litani River. The advance marked Israel’s deepest move into Lebanon in over a decade.
Trump announced on Truth Social on Monday that Israeli troops would retreat from Beirut after a call with Netanyahu and that any troops heading there had already been turned back. He said he had spoken with Hezbollah through representatives and that both sides agreed all shooting would stop.
Netanyahu said in his readout that Israel’s stance remains unchanged and that the Israel Defense Force will continue to operate as planned in southern Lebanon.
He added that if Hezbollah does not cease attacking Israeli cities and citizens, Israel will strike terror targets in Beirut. S. noncompliance with the ceasefire.
Iran’s Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf posted on X that every choice has a price and the bill comes due. The cost of oil jumped again on Monday after Iran halted the talks.
