U.S. and Iran Agree to Four Working Groups and 60-Day Roadmap in Switzerland Talks

Technical talks between Iran and the United States concluded in Switzerland with agreement to establish four working groups covering Sanctions Termination, Nuclear Affairs, Reconstruction and Economic Development, and Monitoring and Implementation. Mediators from Qatar and Pakistan stated that the parties agreed on a roadmap to reach a final agreement within 60 days.

The two sides also established a communication line to avoid incidents and ensure safe passage for commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, along with a de-confliction cell involving Lebanon to support adherence to the cessation of military operations there.

Iran briefly halted talks on Sunday, June 21, 2026, over a U.S. threat, according to Iranian media reports, though reports that the delegation had left proved false and discussions continued.

President Trump stated he would strike Iran again if it does not immediately stop its proxies in Lebanon from causing trouble and warned that the U.S. might start collecting tolls if there is no deal. He also told Iranian leaders that closing the Strait of Hormuz would prevent them from returning to Iran.

Iran's parliament speaker rejected the U.S. threats and said Iran does not attach significance to them. Iran stated it will end talks if Israel does not leave Lebanon. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said tireless Pakistani and Qatari mediation has delivered major progress to end the Lebanon war, with oil and petrochemical exports waived, the blockade lifted, some frozen assets released, and a major reconstruction and development plan launched for Iran.

Bloomberg reported that the nuclear file was not dealt with in the engagement. Pakistan stated that the U.S. and Iran agreed on reduction of enriched uranium levels from 60 percent to 0.7 percent. A correspondent on the ground noted that the timeline is tight, citing the 597 days required for the previous interim nuclear agreement.
